SD Placement Testing [Updated: Make-up Dates Available]

Secondary Division Placement Testing

Last updated May 17, 2021

UPDATE: Make-up test dates are now available

Students’ placement in accelerated core math classes is contingent upon passing a placement test. Due to safety guidelines, ATDP’s placement tests will be administered online this year. Testing will be proctored via live Zoom sessions on Saturday, May 15, beginning promptly at 1:00 PM. Details about joining the Zoom testing session and technology requirements will be emailed directly to students who are required to test.

Do I need to take a test?

Students who are enrolled in the following courses are required to take a placement test.

  • Algebra I
  • Geometry
  • Algebra II/Trigonometry
  • Precalculus
  • Web Development (except those who have completed all prerequisites through ATDP)
  • Algorithms and Data Structures (except those who have completed all prerequisites through ATDP OR can produce documentation of receiving a 4 or 5 on the AP Computer Science A exam)

Only ATDP students who are enrolled in these courses may test; students will NOT be admitted to the testing session if they do not have a confirmed enrollment into the relevant course. These tests are for placement purposes only. Families may be informed of a total percentage score as it relates to placement criteria, but detailed results will not be available.

What if I can’t test on May 15?

If you do not take the placement exam, you will not be allowed to take the class you are enrolled in at ATDP this summer. Please contact the ATDP office to indicate your plans to attend one of the make-up test dates listed below.

Mathematics students
  • Saturday, May 22nd at 10:00 AM
  • Monday, May 24th at 4:00 PM
Computer science students
  • Monday, May 24th at 4:00 PM

What if I don’t pass the test?

The test measures your readiness for (and not your current knowledge of) the course you requested. For most students, your score will confirm that the original placement was correct. In the past, a large majority of students have received passing scores.

However, if your score is low, we may need to find a more appropriate course placement for you. Students whose test results indicate inadequate preparation for a very accelerated math course cannot take that course at ATDP, but we will gladly work with them to place them in an alternative course.

When will I know the results?

We aim to have results very quickly, within the following 1-2 business days. You may access your result via your online account menu. We will contact families via email if we need to help them find an alternate course placement.
