Math Placement Testing (Update: Make-up Dates Available)

Update: Test make-up dates are now available

If you do not take the placement exam, you will not be allowed to take the math class you are enrolled in at ATDP this summer. Please contact the ATDP office to indicate your plans to attend one of the make-up test dates listed below. All testing will be held in 70 University Hall, ATDP’s Main Office. If you cannot make any of these dates, please contact the office to make other arrangements.

  • Friday, May 24, 4:00pm – 6:00pm
  • Wednesday, May 29, 3:00pm – 5:00pm
  • Saturday, June 1, 1:45pm – 3:45pm (after Student Orientation)

Original Post:

Students’ placement in most math classes is contingent upon passing a placement test. ATDP administers placement tests in Berkeley Way West on May 18, beginning promptly at 1:45 PM. Please plan to arrive early to give yourself time to find your testing location. Some instructors may allow non-graphing calculators, so you may wish to bring one with you.

Do I need to take a test?

On the green Course Placement & Payment Notice (mailed in the acceptance packet), students are notified whether their course requires a placement or diagnostic test. Only ATDP students who are enrolled in these courses may test; students will NOT be admitted to the testing location if they do not have a confirmed enrollment into the relevant course. These tests are for placement purposes only. Families may be informed of a total percentage score as it relates to placement criteria, but detailed results will not be available.

Getting to Berkeley Way West

Berkeley Way West is located at the northwest corner of campus, at the intersection of Berkeley Way and Shattuck Avenue (view on Google Maps). Street parking can be challenging near campus, and we encourage families to use public transit if possible. Berkeley’s Parking and Transportation office also maintains comprehensive visitor parking information. If you choose to drive, please be mindful of construction in the downtown area; traffic revisions and closures may impact your ability to navigate and park.

The building is locked on weekends; ATDP staff will admit ONLY participating families. DO NOT HOLD OR PROP OPEN DOORS. Please enter the building through the Berkeley Way entrance at the southeast corner of the building. The doors facing Shattuck Avenue to the west will be locked.

Driving to Berkeley Way West from Interstate 80 (Northbound or Southbound)
  • Take the University Avenue exit and proceed eastward about 3 miles (toward the hills) until you reach Shattuck Avenue.
  • Turn left (heading north) onto Shattuck and change to the rightmost lane.
  • One block further, Berkeley Way West is the large building on your right.
Driving to Berkeley Way West from State Route 24 (Westbound)
  • Take the Highway 13 North exit shortly after exiting the Caldecott Tunnel. Proceed along Highway 13 (it turns into Ashby Ave.) until you reach Shattuck Avenue.
  • Turn right onto Shattuck (heading north) and proceed until you reach University Avenue.
  • To stay on Shattuck, use the middle lane to turn left at University Avenue, then immediately right on Shattuck, heading north.
  • One block further, Berkeley Way West is the large building on your right.

What if I can’t attend on May 18?

Please contact the ATDP office to indicate your plans to attend one of the make-up test dates listed below. All testing will be held in 70 University Hall, ATDP’s Main Office. If you cannot make any of these dates, please contact the office to make other arrangements.

  • Friday, May 24, 4:00pm – 6:00pm
  • Wednesday, May 29, 3:00pm – 5:00pm
  • Saturday, June 1, 1:45pm – 3:45pm (after Student Orientation)

What if I don’t pass the test?

The test measures your readiness for (and not your current knowledge of) the math course you requested. For most students, your score will confirm that the original placement was correct. In the past, a large majority of students have received passing scores.

However, if your score is low, we may need to find a more appropriate course placement for you. Students whose test results indicate inadequate preparation for a very accelerated math course cannot take that course at ATDP, but we will gladly work with them to place them in an alternative course.

When will I know the results?

ATDP will mail home placement test decisions before the end of May. You may also access your result via your online account menu.
