Why Didn’t I Qualify for This Course?

Why Didn’t I Qualify for This Course?

There are many factors that affect the decision to offer placement into an ATDP course. If you were accepted into the Program, but not into a course you requested, please remember:

  • Many courses have prerequisites. Your application may not have provided clear evidence that you met these prerequisites.
  • Not all courses are open to students of all grades. You may have requested a course outside your grade level.
  • Your academic profile may have indicated areas needing improvement in subjects related to the course. ATDP courses are not designed for remedial study, and all students must be well-prepared for the rigor of their chosen course.
  • If you applied to an accelerated mathematics course, note that we have strict prerequisites, and only very well-prepared applicants will be offered placement in these courses.

Additionally, for our most competitive courses, ATDP sometimes considers the strength of the application relative to other students requesting the same course.

The applications of admitted students will continue to receive careful consideration, even when we are unable to offer placement initially, as we want our process to be as inclusive as possible. Please do not call the ATDP office regarding your course placement status. Any questions regarding placement or wait pool status must be submitted to our office in writing by email (atdpoffice@berkeley.edu) or fax (510-642-0510).
