2207.1 Public Speaking (AM)
5 units M/Th, 8:30-12:00 A. Filmer $372
This course is a rigorous, but friendly introduction to a very powerful mode of communication. Being successful--in academia, business, the arts, or other arenas--demands that you be able to speak clearly, coherently, and passionately in public. We will cover topics that include verbal and non-verbal language, how to minimize communication apprehension, differences between standard and non-standard dialects of English, vocal variety and projection, rhetorical strategies of persuasion, audience analysis, and ethical considerations in public speaking. Excellent speech-making requires diligence in the research, writing, revising, and outlining phases that precede the oral presentation. Students will leave this class knowing how to construct and deliver an effective five-minute speech while feeling more confident and comfortable than they may ever have imagined!
Homework per class meeting: 3-5 hours

5 units T/F, 8:30-12:00 F. Lewis $372
Students in AP English Language and Composition will develop the reading skills to understand and respond to rich and complex works of literature. We will learn to explore the meaning of a literary work and to analyze the way in which it is written. In doing so, we will examine the writer's purposes: why the author wants to write--wants to speak--in the first place. In preparation for reading and for life, as well as for the AP Exam in English Language and Composition in May 2003, we will read across genres, styles, voices, points of view, and narratives. We will write many essays and engage in heated discussions.
Prerequisite: Completion of at least freshman year of high school or permission of the Director. Completion of at least sophomore year is recommended.
Homework per class meeting: 4-6 hours

IMPORTANT NOTE: The 5-unit option concludes with the end of the regular ATDP summer session. The 10-unit option has 5 additional meetings to be arranged during the following school year. The extended class also includes additional writing assignments, student-instructor feedback conferences, and practice in multiple-choice questions and essay writing.
