NOTE: THE TIME SCHEDULE INDICATED HERE (8:30-12:00) IS CORRECT. THE SCHEDULE ON THE PRINTED BROCHURE IS IN ERROR, DUE TO A SCHEDULING CHANGE MADE AFTER THE BROCHURE WAS PUBLISHED.

In this class, students will learn how to create web pages with HTML (HyperText Markup Language), using cutting-edge text, graphics, and multimedia programs designed specifically for the World Wide Web. This class will be an academic community in cyberspace, its students interacting with their instructors, their classmates, and other ATDP students via their own e-mail accounts and weblogs.

The information and opportunities to be found on the Internet demand that students acquire new skills in, and clear understandings of, information technology. This course is designed to fill just such a need. Its primary objectives: (1) to give students the skills necessary to understand, navigate and engage the Internet with ease; (2) to teach students web page design and maintenance; and (3) to provide students a meaningful context for which to understand our so-called "information age."

Through this course, students will be able to investigate technical, sociological, and philosophical issues in the rapidly developing digital communities of scholars, organizations, companies, individuals, and cities, and their impact on schools and on society at large.
Homework per class meeting: 2-4 hours

2231.1 Introduction to Programming
10 units MWF, 8:30-12:00 G. Serag-Eldin $665
This course is intended as an introduction to computer programming for students who have some experience using computers and the Internet. The focus of the course is on developing an understanding of protocols and programming languages for computers--in particular those related to the Web. This will include HTML, Javascript, DHTML, and introductory concepts in Java. Topics covered will permit students to be conversant with the features of a real computer language, including functions, parameters, control structures, and some object-oriented programming concepts. The resulting programming literacy will enable students to develop a dynamic, web-based final project.
Prerequisite: Algebra--students must be comfortable with mathematical thinking, and in particular with the ideas of a variable and a function.
Homework per class meeting: 5-7 hours

2231.2 Introduction to Programming
10 units MWF, 1:00-4:30 G. Serag-Eldin $665
(Same as course #2231.1, except for the schedule.)

2233 The Advanced Internet Classroom
10 units T/Th, 10:00-4:30 L. Nebres $665

NOTE: THIS COURSE MEETS ON TUESDAY AND THURSDAY FROM 10 A.M. TO 4:30 P.M.

This course is designed for students who have had extensive experience with the Internet, and with creating websites--either on their own or through another class. Students applying for this class should have a strong grasp of HTML--this class will move on quickly towards learning advanced HTML 4.0, DHTML (Dynamic HTML), Cascading Style Sheets (CSS2), and Javascript.

Finally, this class will delve deeply into XML (Extensible Markup Language), the latest revolutionary web protocol that is redefining the Internet itself. Interested applicants must submit examples of their HTML design work--with a working URL, or on diskette or zip disk.

Preference will be given to students who took last summer's Internet Classroom at ATDP, but new applicants who can demonstrate outstanding proficiency in web design will be seriously considered for admission.
Homework per class meeting: 2-4 hours
