We apologize for the lack of news this summer... this site's webmaster was busy teaching his Internet classes, and unfortunately could not find the time to add items of general interest. But, come back here in a little while and check out some cool new links. A lot of course websites and personal web pages were generated in various ATDP classes this summer, and will be posted very soon! (--L. Nebres)

The ATDP Secondary Division Orientation at Pauley Ballroom on campus was held today. If you want to take a look at some of the snapshots of today's orientation, click here. The student speakers were: Aaron Liao, Leticia Elzaurdia, Vikash Mansinghka, and Ching Han Wong. They all did a splendid job! (Thanks to Aaron, who helped me update the NewsBITS page.)

The ATDP Secondary Division Orientation is next weekend. If you've never been on the Berkeley campus before, go here for a preview, a virtual visit to the part of the campus where the Student Union is, as well as to the bookstore where you can purchase your course textbooks and readers (Campus Textbook Exchange), which is right across from the Student Union.

Saturday evening, Flossie Lewis, ATDP teacher extraordinaire, treated the staff and two ATDP stalwarts, Abigail Lustig (a longtime ATDP student, staff, mentor and friend) and Catherine Yoes, an ATDP teacher, to dinner at Mekong Restaurant down on lower University Avenue. Abigail and Catherine have just graduated this week from Ph.D. programs at Cal--History of Science and English respectively--with great distinction.

The second ATDP course website of the 1997 summer session is up and running. Visit The Internet Classroom, ATDP Course #1623. Today is the antepenultimate day of May and that, ladies and gentlemen, is your SAT word o' the day!

Today we held an Orientation for students sponsored by the San Francisco Unified School District today, which was at Thurgood Marshall Academic High School in the Bayview/Hunter's Point district of San Francisco. Sixty or so students and their proud parents attended the Orientation, and all are looking forward to the main orientation for all ATDP SD students at Pauley Ballroom on the Berkeley campus on June 7th, two weekends from now.

Today was the last session for the SFUSD/ATDP 1996-97 Year-Round Program. Students gathered to display and talk about their poster projects, as well as have a pizza lunch with everyone--students, teachers, staff, mentors. Until next schoolyear...

The first joint (SD and ED) ATDP faculty preservice meeting was held today, at sweaty and sweltering 2515 Tolman Hall (it's hot today!) as the gathered faculty met to officially begin Summer 1997. An outline of my brief talk, The Internet as The Classroom, can be found here...

May 15

Yet another ATDP staff birthday party, this time for student worker Yacqui Ponce who was surprised with the usual delectable delight from The Bakeshop...

May 3

Some ATDP students spent part of this perfectly beautiful Saturday afternoon grooving to the sights and sounds of "Jam on the Groove," a hip-hop dance and music extravaganza at Zellerbach Hall. The incredible energy and dynamism of the young performers was astonishing, their creativity inspiring...

The Elementary Division admissions packets are being mailed today--students should be receiving them sometime next week. Please note that we are not able to respond to any questions on course placement or course changes over the phone. You may write or e-mail a letter to the ATDP Director. (The ATDP office e-mail and snail mail addresses are here.)

April 25

Beaucoup congratulations are in order for ATDP instructor, Raymond Yee, who finally got his Ph.D., in Biophysics. Good luck, Dr. Yee! We asked Ray to come in to the ATDP office, ostensibly for a "meeting" with Nina. Little did he know what was in store for him...

April 15

The Elementary Division courses have really filled up this year, and quite a few students are on the waiting list... As for the Secondary Division, if you wish to change your course placement, please do this in writing (either regular mail or e-mail)--and be patient, as the waiting lists are moving rather slowly.

Spring break finds this page's editor at a track meet in the middle of Central California's vast San Joaquin Valley. His friends acquitted themselves well. Angel won the 110 meter hurdles and placed second in the triple and long jumps, Frankie won the pole vault, and Chuck ran a powerful third leg in the 4x400. All in all, it was a great way to rev up the ol' batteries for this summer...

April 1

The admissions packet materials for the Secondary Division have just arrived from our printer. We are in the process of putting together each individual packet for more than 1,100 students admitted to the 1997 Summer Session, ATDP Secondary Division. The packets will be in the mail over the next couple of days this week. Please expect your packets to arrive sometime early next week.
