March 28

The main campus scheduling office has assigned ATDP its summer classrooms. Check some of them out here, as well as look at some photos of the campus in spring. This summer, quite a few of the rooms are on the East side of campus. For those of you who are familiar with the Berkeley campus, this means an uphill climb to your classrooms, if you're coming from downtown Berkeley and the BART station. By the end of the six weeks, you'll be sure to develop strong leg muscles from all this walking around -- as well as developing powerful brain cells from taking ATDP classes of course!

March 10

Spring has sprung in Berkeley... I met these fiery crimson and gold Dutch tulips on my way to work today.

March 8

It may be a glorious, Bay Area Saturday outside, but to these ATDP students, they'd rather be taking an intensive A.P. Psychology review session with Prof. Frank Worrell, who flew in yesterday from State College, Pennsylvania, just to conduct the session. (Frank has taught the A.P. Psychology course at ATDP for many summers.)

March 5

And YET another surprise birthday party...! This one's for Lloyd Nebres (this website's resident druid) and Raymond Yee (program mentor and instructor). March continues to be a hopping month for Pisceans in this local joint... (Lloyd's is March 6; Raymond turns 30 on March 10th...)

March 3

Another surprise birthday party! This time for Yoshiko Tagami (long-time ATDP "Enforcer") and Gary Hsueh (our relatively new student worker). March is definitely a happening month for birthday boys and girls in this local joint... (Gary's and Yoshiko's birthdays are on March 2.)

February 24

Today, SFUSD students came to their regular monthly session, including the Internet Classroom. Click here for the appropriate photographic evidence.

February 22

It's a perfectly wonderful weekend day outside, but what are these intrepid ATDP students doing? Taking an A.P. Biology review session with instructor Lois Peterson, of course. Over the years, Lois' review sessions have yielded a tremendous batting average -- a considerable majority of those who have taken the course received 5s on the A.P. Biology test. Most of the rest have received 4s ... an outstanding record indeed, even for ATDP students.

February 18

The following Secondary Division classes are already full (mostly with returning ATDP students), as the Returning Student deadline of Feb. 14 has come and gone. As additional classes may be filled before your application is received, please be certain to list all acceptable alternative choices.

1600.3 -- Reading to Write (AM section)
1623 -- The Internet Classroom
1636 -- Geometry (AM section)
1664.1 -- Dynamic Chemistry (AM section)
1668 -- A.P. Biology

February 14

A Valentine's Day surprise party is sprung for ATDP student worker (and Cal English/Philo major) Candace Grant. Happy 21st, Candace. And Happy Valentine's Day and Happy President's Day, just to round off the weekend's fests.

February 13

A new photographic map of the route from Berkeley BART to Tolman Hall is available on this website. This is useful if you've never been to the UC Berkeley campus before and are taking BART to Berkeley. Check it out for a virtual visit to Tolman Hall, home of the ATDP, before actually setting foot on the lovely Berkeley campus!

February 9

An overcast Sunday afternoon on campus finds the ATDP and its intrepid staff, mentors, instructors, students, and parents on their way to the Alvin Ailey Dance Co. performance. We all enjoyed the troupe's marvelous, dynamic dancing. Alas, photography wasn't allowed inside the Hall, but at least we have some pix of our group before and after the show.

February 5

ATDP/SFUSD students take part in a "Meet the Artist" session with the Alvin Ailey Dance Company, held at the Zellerbach Hall on campus. The main show will be on Sunday afternoon. Photos on this photogallery page.

Jan. 31 to
Feb. 3

NETWORK OUTAGES are occuring sporadically on the Tolman Hall subnet, and perhaps on other subnets on campus. As such, our website has been intermittently inaccessible. Apologies to all for this inconvenience. I hope the techies get it fixed by Monday!!

February 1

So long, Herb . . . Is there an ATDP connection to Herb Caen? You bet there is, in the form of an item brought to his attention by of one of our instructors, Sue Magidson (Foundations of Algebra), several years ago. I didn't clip the column out, but perhaps Sue did. Maybe she can post it here? (2/11/97: here it is!) . . . Also, Caen mentioned the Thieriots often (high society SF folks). The Thieriot kids used to attend the ED program. . . . And finally, a friend of mine actually knew one of Caen's namephreaks, April Showers, who used to do the weather report for a Hilo, Hawaii radio station.

January 27

Almost every day, I receive e-mail from current and former ATDP students who have become regular correspondents. Here are a couple of recent examples of the wit, wisdom, humor and sometimes pathos of these delightful young people:

Oh, btw, were you able to look at that comic URL I sent you? If you still have the email can you send it back to me? I stupidly forgot to write it down/bookmark it/commit it to memory/make it my alert sound/write it in blood on the wall next to the computer (no, wait, the men with the white jackets said that's bad and that I'd have to go back to the place with the nice padded walls if I did that).
MK
P.S.: Sorry for the pychotic babble, my minds aren't what they used to be. :-)

. . . . . . . . . . . . .

Finals are almost over-but now so is the semester. Each day, which seems as a minute, brings me closer to college! Perhaps I should start preparing... It's much work, but it's really making me nervous. I think UC Berkeley is my destiny. I've never even thought of going anywhere else. Of course, I'll have to think of that when applying to places...but-oh, it's bad to think about this now. But what can I do? It's not even like you have to go to college to succeed. I just want to.

MS

. . . . . . . . . . . . .

I am testing out of the CS 46A class and am currently enrolled in the 46B class. It looks interesting but I am sorry to say still miles below my current programming ability. Which translates to easy 'A'. :-) I am thinking of transfering to a different school, and considering UC Berkeley. . . . I am sorry to say that I am going to have to decline the offer to help with the Java programming class as I now have plans to leave the country and experience a different part of life. I am considering currently two places: Puerto Rico and Africa in that order. I wan't to go to both places but of course that means lots of money which translates to lots of work. I'll see what happens.

January 20

Applications to the Secondary Division are already coming in. The initial popular courses are the more advanced ones: AP Biology, AP Psychology, Math Analysis. Remember, it is to your advantage to send in your application early!

January 17

The ATDP home roost, 3639 Tolman, has undergone its first real spring cleaning (pre-empting the real spring's advent by a couple of months) in many years. If you've been to the ATDP office, you know what a cozy and cluttered place it is, with shelves of paperstuff and books, banks of computer monitors, desks that show um, the "busy-ness" of its owner. One of our intrepid student workers, Gary Hsueh, took it upon himself to reorganize the layout of the office, with marvelous results. Photo to follow soon!

January 7

Macworld Expo opens in San Francisco. Apple, Inc. to announce details of its plans in light of its recent purchase of NeXT, Inc. The ATDP, an early Macintosh adopter and Macophile joint, rejoices. The future is looking good, indeed.

January 1

Happy New Year! This page's editor spent the first few hours of the new year fishing. Actually, he was at a fish auction somewhere in the Honolulu harbor. He had read a news feature about it, and was curious enough (he and his mom) to go on a dawn trek to this event. Click on the fishing link above, if you want to know more about it...
