2321 Rainforests (AM)
8:30-12:00 Jody Ferrara $405
Explore the wonders of the tropical rainforest in this course created for young scientists. Together, we will investigate different aspects of rainforests: their plants and animals, their people, and their products. We will grow rainforest habitats in small groups and keep science journals detailing our observations through drawing and writing. We will research animals and write and create art projects about them. Also, we will discover just how many rainforest products we use in our daily lives and use many of them in recipes to make tasty treats. Throughout this course, the emphasis will be on the essential nature of the world's rainforests: why we need the rainforests on our earth and what we can do to preserve them.

2322 Rainforests (PM)
1:00-4:30 Jody Ferrara $405
(Same as Course #2321, except for the schedule.)

2324 Writing and Drawing the World
1:00-4:30 Heather MacLeod $405
This is a class for students who love to write and would like to become more confident in drawing. Through writing descriptive poetry and drawing real-life objects, we will sharpen our observation skills, we will practice translating what we see into words, and then translate what we see into curved and straight lines. We will illustrate poetry and descriptions, as well as describe pictures. This is not a class for expert artists, but rather for writers who want to learn a little about drawing in order to improve their writing and illustrating abilities.

2325 Our Star, the Sun (AM)
8:30-12:00 Sally Feldman $415
In this course, we will explore the Sun and its impact on our daily lives, including some of the historical cultural traditions associated with the Sun. We will have many opportunities to practice scientific inquiry as we formulate and pose questions central to solar events. We will examine the size of the Sun by creating a scale model in comparison to the Earth. We will develop our knowledge of shadows, orbits, and what makes day and night. We will learn basic concepts about the Sun and build on those concepts as we learn what happens during a solar eclipse. We will check in daily with a live display of the Sun's surface via the Internet and view videos of solar events.

Throughout the course we will develop a solar eclipse book to document our work, as well as keep a Sun journal to track our growing and changing knowledge of the Sun. NASA developed and provided many of the materials used in the course including posters, handouts, videos, worksheets, and computer materials. We will look at a "Sun Spotter" as it tracks the movement of sunspots across the surface of the Sun. Also, a NASA scientist will visit the classroom to answer questions related to the Sun. And finally, we will create a computer slideshow that demonstrates the many concepts we have learned.

2326 Our Star, the Sun (PM)
1:00-4:30 Sally Feldman $415
(Same as Course #2325, except for the schedule.)

2327 Applying Mathematics (AM)
8:30-12:00 Julie McNamara $415
In this course we will approach mathematics as a sense-making endeavor as we apply our math skills to games, logic puzzles, and story problems related to real-life experiences. We will record our thinking in math journals, and learn to communicate about mathematics in ways that require us to be creative thinkers, approach problems in a systematic or logical way, observe patterns, and generalize our findings. Throughout the course, students will work individually and in groups, with an emphasis placed on the importance of communication, mathematical risk-taking, and the value of diverse approaches for solving problems.

2328 Applying Mathematics (PM)
1:00-4:30 Julie McNamara $415
(Same as Course #2327, except for the schedule.)
