2530.1 Introduction to Computers and the Internet (AM)
10 units MWF, 8:30-12:00 Staff $720

This course is a comprehensive introduction to computers and the internet. The class will start with the basicsÑthe conceptual foundations and functions of computer hardware and softwareÑand proceed with a systematic examination of the structure and use of the internet. Students will learn all of this in a practical way, by working on a substantial web design and programming project based on their academic interests. They will learn to program for the World Wide Web using HTML, XHTML, CSS and Javascript coding. Students will be required to focus their projects on a specific discipline or academic area in which they have a prior and ongoing interest (e.g., programming a website for a regular school research project). Oral presentations will be held in the last week of the session. In this course, students will gain a concrete understanding of digital technology within the broader context of culture and societyÑan important goal in an era of ubiquitous interpenetration of digital technologies in everyday life.
Homework per class meeting: 4-7 hours

2533 The Virtual ATDP
Creating an Online Academic Community
10 units TThx*, 9:30-2:00 Lloyd Nebres & Cynthia Nie $720

NOTE: THIS COURSE MEETS 3 DAYS A WEEK, WITH THE 3RD DAY DEPENDING ON THE STUDENT'S ASSIGNED ATDP COURSE (see below).

This course is an interdisciplinary project creating an online component to ATDP during the summer and beyond. Each student will be assigned as an "internet TeacherÕs Assistant" (iTA) for an ATDP course. For this course, the iTA will: (a) create and maintain the class website; (b) set up individual student weblogs; (c) set up and moderate a group/class weblog or bulletin board; and (d) facilitate an online class community via Instant Messaging. Given these significant responsibilities, students will obtain TA credit for the ATDP course to which they will be assigned. In this course, students will expand prior skills in website design and coding in XHTML and CSS (Cascading Style Sheets), study applications of technology in education, and gain excellent organizational and leadership experience. More information on this class can be found online at: http://l.editthispage.com/2003/11/05

Prerequisites: Working knowledge of website design and construction; current maintenance of a weblog or online journal. Applicants will need to be interviewed online by the instructor before completing and submitting the ATDP application. E-mail the instructor at lloyd@uclink4.berkeley.edu or contact him via AOL Instant Messenger (AIM) at lloydinmaui. Recommended but not required: completion of the ATDP course for which you will be the assigned internet TA.

* The student will attend his or her iTA course once each week in addition to the regularly scheduled Monday and Wednesday class meetings.

Homework per class meeting: 3-5 hours

2580 Study Lab
0 units By Arrangement Staff $235
Study Lab is offered in tandem with the student's academic course in order to provide assistance with learning a specific subject, organizing course materials, managing time, understanding and completing assignments, and reviewing for tests. Students will develop study skills which they can also apply to other courses in the future. In Study Lab, students will gain social skills to use in presenting themselves with confidence in class and in meetings with instructors.

The Study Lab meets twice each week and will be scheduled on the same days as the student's academic course. If the student is enrolled in an afternoon class, the Study Lab will be held in the morning, and vice versa. Check the box under Course Selections (Section II) on p. 1 of the application form to receive more information and to apply. ATDP will send more information upon acceptance. The Study Lab is not available as a stand-alone course.
