For more inspiration, class activities will include drawing and art and a visit to a local museum. Throughout the course, students will build analytical thinking skills and develop writing skills. Class assignments will focus on the process of thinking, drafting, editing, and revising.

2403.1 Grammar for Reading and Writing (AM)
5 units T/F, 8:30-12:00 Flossie Lewis $407
This class provides a strong background in the structure of the English language. Students will learn to improve the effectiveness of their writing, as well as the depth of understanding in their reading of all forms of written text. The class will focus on developing strong sentences, identifying the differences between a phrase and a clause, as well as reasons for the difference. Students will improve their reading of poetry as they identify subject, verb, complement, clauses in the poetry they readÑthe better to understand a sonnet by William Shakespeare or a limerick by Edward Lear. Students who wish to strengthen their writing at the high school level because they are uncertain of their language skills are encouraged to consider this course. It is also suitable for those students who want to get ready for AP exams or the writing portion of the new, upcoming 2005 SAT.

Our texts will be Eye on Editing 2 and Grammar to Go, Goldstein. Readings and assignments for composition will also be based on additional course material.

They will write many essays and engage in heated discussions. Prerequisite: Completion of at least freshman year of high school or permission of the Director. Completion of at least sophomore year is recommended.
