Placement for Students Completing 6th Grade

For students who will be completing 6th grade in June 2008, we offer special transitional courses in the Elementary Division that challenge and support them in their academic pursuits. In general it is more developmentally appropriate for students completing 6th grade to apply to the ED because they often do not yet possess the requisite study skills for Secondary Division (SD) courses. Please see the 6th grade course descriptions.

For Returning ED Students:

Students who have previously attended the ED and are completing 6th grade are eligible either to return to the ED for placement into one of the transitional courses for 6th graders or to apply to limited courses in the SD. Spaces in select six-week SD courses are reserved for exceptional students who are ready to take on the challenge of demanding, rigorous coursework on the UC Berkeley campus.

Former ED students who wish to apply to the SD must complete an SD application and will be considered new SD students for application purposes. Note that the SD new student application deadline is Wednesday, February 28.

Placement for sixth graders in SD is not guaranteed, so include both SD and ED course choices as alternatives on your application.
